SEPA works to preserve and improve the quality of Scotland's lochs, rivers, estuaries, wetlands, groundwater and coastal waters, so that they are sustainable for the future.

Scotland has an extensive network of rivers and streams and a coastline estimated at 10,000km. They have substantial biodiversity, conservation and economic value, and it is one of SEPA's aims to protect and, where appropriate, improve their quality. In order that progress is made, SEPA has built up an extensive monitoring network designed to represent the quality of all significant waters.
