Disposal
Any waste which is not recycled or composted
and from which no further value can be recovered will be disposed
of to landfill. This represents the least desireable option for the
waste within the hierarchy.
As a result of the Landfill Directive,
there will be a significant reduction in the amount of waste
directed to landfill and, in particular, the biodegradable
component of waste – one of the main contributors to the production
of methane which is also a very strong greenhouse gas. The Landfill Allowance Scheme sets out statutory
targets for the amount of biodegradeable waste permitted to
landfill at 2010, 2013 and 2020.
