What is SEPA doing to promote business waste minimisation?
SEPA has its own dedicated waste minimisation team who are the
key contacts for business waste minimisation work within
SEPA. The main outputs of their work are listed below:
Commercial and Industrial Waste Minimisation Projects
SEPA is a key partner in establishing and funding a variety of
sector and geographically focused waste minimisation projects
throughout Scotland , in partnership with industry, Envirowise, the
Scottish Energy Efficiency Office, local enterprise companies
Scottish Water and local authorities.
This work demonstrates substantial cost savings and improved
environmental performance for participating companies. Projects
include consultancy-led waste minimisation clubs, environmental
business forums and local business support initiatives. Details of
these can be found on the Initiatives of this website.
Waste minimisation projects are also helping to implement the
objectives of the eleven Area Waste Plans for Scotland , by
achieving a reduction in commercial and industrial solid waste
arisings. All waste minimisation projects funded by
SEPA must record the following environmental outcomes:
- Reduction in energy use
- Reduction in water use
- Reduction in solid waste
- Reduction in liquid waste (strength and volume)
Training for SEPA Staff
SEPA have an ongoing waste minimisation training programme for
regulations staff which covers the benefits of waste minimisation
practices to businesses. Staff promote waste minimisation to
regulated customers, to help them meet and exceed regulatory
standards for environmental protection.
