Glossary and acronyms and abbreviations

On the Waste Data pages it may be necessary to use technical language, or terms with a specific meaning within the context they are used.  It may also be necessary to use acronyms and abbreviations, although we have tried to reduce these to a minimum.

In order to help you we have created a glossary of the terms used and a list of acronyms and abbreviations appearing in the pages.  These are accessible from the related items.

Coding systems

Waste Data also use a number of coding systems for classifying waste, business types and waste management methods. Basic facts and further information on the following are provided:

• European Waste Catalogue List of Waste (EWC 2002)
• European Waste Catalogue for Statistics (EWC-STAT)
• NACE (European statistical classification of economic activities)
• UK Standard Industrial Classification (UK SIC)
• Recovery and Disposal (R&D) Codes

Reporting areas

Waste data are often aggregated and reported by specific geographical areas.  Often these are not widely understood.  The following will help you identify these areas:
