Landfill sites and capacity information

SEPA has developed detailed reports to show the amount and location of remaining landfill capacity in Scotland.  These cover landfill sites that hold a Waste Management Licence or Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) permit issued by SEPA.  Most landfill sites are now regulated under a PPC permit. The landfill sites considered in the reports are those that are actively accepting waste (or are capable of doing so), those that are in restoration and those that are closed.  Further information on the lifecycle of landfills is available from the waste regulation pages on this site. The landfill sites and capacity report has two parts:
  • A PDF document summarising landfill capacity in Scotland.
  • An Excel spreadsheet listing the number and types of landfills in Scotland, the tonnage of waste they landfill in a given year and their licensed/permitted capacities.  There is also an estimation of remaining capacity.

It is important to consider capacity information in conjunction with actual tonnages handled and the number of data quarters submitted in that year. The data are extracted from SEPA’s register of licensed/permitted sites and from the information supplied by operators of these sites on the quarterly licensed/permitted site return form.

The reports contain the following information, where available:

  • operational status;
  • licence/permit number;
  • site location (for example, local authority and National Grid Reference);
  • type of landfill (hazardous, non-hazardous, inert);
  • total capacity in tonnes (from licence/permit);
  • annual capacity in tonnes (from licence/permit);
  • tonnage of waste landfilled per year (from statutory returns
  • remaining capacity in tonnes (from operator);
  • rate of infill (tonnes/year) and date of ceasing infill (from operator), where available.

This information is important for waste management planning and policy decisions.  It is also needed for reporting under the European Union Waste Statistics.

Maps showing the locations of landfills in Scotland are available on the waste infrastructure maps page. Information on the capacity of all waste facilities in Scotland are available in the Waste sites & capacity information reports.
