Waste sites and capacity information
SEPA has developed detailed reports on waste management sites in
Scotland holding a Waste Management Licence or Pollution Prevention
and Control (PPC) permit with SEPA. Further details on landfill
sites in Scotland are available on the Landfill sites and capacity reports page.
The waste sites and capacity report has two parts:
- A PDF document summarising waste capacity in Scotland.
- An Excel spreadsheet listing the numbers and types of
licensed/permitted waste management facilities in Scotland and,
where available, the tonnages of waste they handle in a given year
and their licensed/permitted capacities.
It is important to consider capacity information in conjunction
with actual tonnages handled and the number of data quarters
submitted in that year.
The data is extracted from SEPA’s register of licensed/permitted
sites and from the information supplied by operators of these sites
on the quarterly licensed/permitted site return form.

The reports contain the following information, where
available:
- Operational status of site;
- Licence/permit number;
- Site location (for example, local authority and National Grid
Reference);
- Site activity (for example, landfill, incinerator, civic
amenity site);
- Licensed waste types (household, commercial, industrial,
special, inert);
- Annual capacity in tonnes (as stated in licence/permit);
- Tonnage of waste handled per year (from statutory
returns).
The annual capacity of a facility is not
always stated on a PPC permit. Also, not all facilities that
handle waste without being permitted under PPC Chapter 5 & 6.8b
are included in the reports, for example, cement kilns. SEPA
is working towards completing this information.
These reports are important for waste
management planning and policy decisions. They are also
needed for reporting under the European Union Waste Statistics
Regulations
Maps showing the locations and types of waste management
facilities in Scotland are available at on the waste infrastructure maps page. Further details
on landfill sites are given in the landfill
sites & capacity information reports.
