Area Waste Plan reports
The National Waste Plan brings together Area Waste Plans for the
11 different Waste Strategy Areas in Scotland.
We all need to work together to manage the increasing amount of
waste material being produced in Scotland, the majority of which is
buried in the ground in landfill sites. Approximately 70% of our
waste in Scotland is landfilled. This material decays to produce
landfill gas and liquid leachate which can cause pollution if not
properly controlled. The space available for landfilling is also
decreasing and, with new standards from Europe, we need to find
other ways of dealing with our waste.
Under Scotland’s National Waste Strategy, Scotland has been
divided into 11 waste areas, each of which has its own Area
Waste Plan. The best option focuses on waste prevention initiatives,
recycling and composting, other waste treatment and finally
disposal to landfill. The Area Waste Plan sets out challenging
targets, including for recycling and composting. After Reducing,
Reusing and Recycling as much as we can, we need to look at other
ways to recover value from the waste, for example the generation of
energy.
Strategic Waste Management Review
The Strategic Waste Management Review (SWMR) is a comprehensive
study of waste management and infrastructure across Scotland in
2006 carried out by SEPA. There is a report for each waste strategy
area and can be accessed here.
Guidance on Waste Management Options
Successful delivery of waste facilities
requires proactive early engagement with local communities through
regular information provision and consultation on key decisions.
This guidance
(273k) produced in partnership with Scottish Waste
Awareness Group (SWAG), will support NWS delivery partners in
undertaking activities on community information provision and
consultation, required as part of the development of waste
infrastructure to meet NWP and AWP targets.
