Do I need to register as a packaging producer?
If your company has a turnover exceeding £2
million and handles more than 50 tonnes
of packaging per annum, you will be assigned a recycling obligation
in each material that you handle, calculated in such a way as to
meet the targets laid down in the
EC Directive on Packaging & Packaging Waste
(94/62)
). To
offset this recycling obligation, you or your compliance scheme
must buy Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs) from an Accredited
Reprocessor or Exporter as proof that a certain amount of
recycling has been carried out on your behalf.
Registered companies and compliance
schemes must submit data on packaging handled and ensure that a
certain amount of packaging waste is recovered or recycled. A list
of compliance schemes is available on the public register, held on
the National Packaging Waste
Database.
If you think your company should be registered, please contact a
member of the Producer Compliance &
Waste Shipments Unit in your area.
