Legislation : WEEE Directive

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) and the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (ROHS) Directives came into force on 13 February 2003, setting collection, recycling and recovery targets for all types of electrical products. The Restriction on Hazardous Substances Directive bans the use of heavy metals and brominated fire retardants in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment.

The Directives must be implemented in European Member states by August 2004. Collection, treatment and financing systems for WEEE must be in place by September 2005 and the first collection and treatment targets are to be attained by December 2006.

All aspects of policy development, provision of advice and enforcement of legislation relating to Producer Responsibility are handled and coordinated by SEPA’s Producer Responsibility Unit in Stirling.
