Previous classification scheme
Before the introduction of the Water
Framework Directive (WFD), SEPA had a number of classification
schemes which it used to report the status of
Scotland's aqueous environment. The classification
schemes for rivers, estuaries, coasts and lochs can be found
below:
The information gathered from monitoring and classification is
available on SEPA's interactive mapping system:
SEPA produced annual water quality classification reports
until 2006. These reports detailed the major improvements
and deteriorations in water quality each year and reported progress
towards water quality improvement targets set in 2000.
The 2006 report is available below:
In 2008, SEPA produced a report which examined trends in water
quality since 2000. It presented details of the most significant
quality changes and looked at whether SEPA had achieved its 2006
targets to improve water quality in Scotland. It
also considered future issues likely to apply to SEPA’s
monitoring strategies and anticipated outcomes for Scotland's water
environment. A link to the report and case studies is below.
Details of the current classiciation scheme is available
