Solway Tweed

Home to around 450,000 people, the Solway Tweed river basin district has an area of around 17,500 km² and incorporates much of the Scottish Borders, Dumfries and Galloway and the Eden and Esk valleys. As well as supporting a wide range of internationally important habitats and wildlife, the district also supports a range of economic activities, including tourism, agriculture, forestry and manufacturing.

The main river catchments in the district include the Rivers Tweed, Eden, Esk, Annan and Nith, Dee-Ken and Cree and their associated wetlands. The river basin management plan for the district will ensure the protection, improvement and sustainable use of the water environment for future generations.

The plan will be delivered via two Area Advisory Groups (AAGs) with support and advice from the National Advisory Group in Scotland and the National Liaison Panel in England.

Area Advisory Groups (AAGs)
These include representatives from:

  • co-deliverers and key stakeholders
  • those providing water management measures (deliverers)
  • organisations/activities causing pressures and impacts within the water environment

National Advisory Group (NAG)
In Scotland, the NAG has a supporting role to:

  • oversee the river basin management planning process in Scotland;
  • contribute to the preparation of the River Basin Management Plan;
  • help coordinate the work of AAGs.

English river basin district liaison panels
The Environment Agency set up liaison panels to help achieve active involvement and stakeholder engagement.
