Habitat enhancement
SEPA's role in habitat enhancement focuses on our aims and
duties regarding conservation, biodiversity and sustainable
development. We work in partnership with others to protect
Scotland's environment.
Our habitat enhancement work promotes the conservation and
enhancement of the natural beauty and amenity of both inland
and coastal waters, and of the land associated with such waters.
These environments provide important habitats, supporting a wide
range of species. However, these habitats are often subject to a
range of threats, particularly pollution, development and poor
management practices.
The aim of habitat enhancement is to achieve
measurable improvements to the aquatic environment. We do
this by raising awareness of best management practices and by
providing information and guidance.
Amongst other habitat enhancement activities, SEPA:
- develops guidance documents in partnership with other
organisations;
- publishes information leaflets;
- has established demonstration sites;
- is closely involved in Local Biodiversity Action Plans in
Scotland.
