Radioactive substances online notifications and applications
Notifications
If you wish to notify SEPA of certain lower risk radioactive substances activities, you can do so using our online forms:
- Notifications to manage certain radioactive sources, including orphan sources, and radioactive waste from an incident
- Radioactive substances notification form - MS Word version
Applying for authorisation
The type of authorisation you will require is set out in the Radioactive Substances Authorisation guide
Before applying for a permit or registration under the Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations (EASR) please ensure you can comply with the associated standard conditions:
Applications for sealed sources must be submitted to SEPA by secure systems. Failure to submit such applications securely will result in SEPA considering that the application has not been duly made. Please contact RSenquiries@sepa.org.uk for advice before you submit any application.

Transfrontier shipment of radioactive substances
The Shipments of Radioactive Substance (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 apply to imports to the UK from EU of sealed sources. Declarations for imports under these regulations should be made on the forms available on the UK Government website. The declarations should be emailed using a secure service to SEPA in Word format using the details on the UK Government website. We aim to acknowledge a declaration within 28 days.
There are no requirements under the UK regulations to make a prior written declaration when shipping sealed radioactive sources from the UK to the EU. However, UK exporters to the EU should seek guidance from the European Commission and EU countries on any requirements they must comply with before shipping.
Shipment of radioactive waste and spent fuel
The Transfrontier Shipment of Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 apply to:
- imports to the UK
- exports from the UK
Applications should be made using the forms available on the UK Government website.
You may also need to consider whether other waste shipment controls apply.
