LIFE SMART Waste project extension

24 May 2019

We are pleased to confirm that the work of the LIFE SMART Waste project will continue until 31 May 2020.

A one-year extension for the LIFE SMART Waste project, which is co-funded by the EU LIFE Programme, has been approved by the European Commission. The extension will enable the LIFE SMART Waste project beneficiaries - Scottish Environment Protection Agency, Natural Resources Wales, ACR+ (Association of Cities and Regions for sustainable Resource management) and Brussels Environment - to conclude their ongoing work to develop and demonstrate innovative ways of understanding, tackling and reducing waste-related crime during 2019.

The extension also offers the LIFE SMART Waste project with an opportunity to investigate the threat of waste crime arising as a result of relatively recent waste import restrictions in international markets. It is envisaged that additional research, in collaboration with INTERPOL, would provide information on the scale and impact of the China waste import restrictions (from January 2018) on the European waste market, considering the impact of illegal disposal of waste streams within EU jurisdictions and the illegal export to non-OECD countries.

LIFE SMART Waste plans to bring together environmental regulators, enforcement agencies, policymakers, legislators and key stakeholders to share the project's results at its final conference in Brussels. Details of the conference dates, venue and joining instructions will be released soon.

To receive the latest conference updates and project news, please ensure that you register for the project e-newsletter.
