Changes to permits
Variations
A permit holder can apply for a variation to change the conditions of their permit.
Administrative variations
An administrative variation is a change to permit conditions which does not require SEPA to undertake technical assessment, for example, changing the name of a chemical, lowering a discharge limit, changing an effective date.
These changes do not increase the environmental risk
Energy
SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) plays a crucial role in managing the environmental impacts of Scotland's energy sector, which includes both renewable and non-renewable sources. We developed an Energy Framework to clarify our remit, as we support the Government’s energy ambitions.
We use our regulatory tools, experience, knowledge and partnership approach to help to protect the enviro
Invasive non-native species
What are invasive non-native species?
Non-native species (NNS) are plants and animals which have been introduced (accidentally or deliberately) outside of their native range through human activity.
Many non-native species contribute positively to our lives, as livestock, crops, timber, garden plants or pets. However, a small proportion (10-15%) of non-native species spread rapidly and cause damage
Discharging to land via a soakaway
A soakaway is a sealed system of gravel filled trenches that allows the safe discharge of sewage effluent to the surrounding land. This is sometimes referred to as an infiltration system.
A soakaway also includes mound soakaways. This is a type of soakaway that is built above ground where percolation is slow or where digging trenches may be too difficult. For example, where bedrock is close to the

How to surrender an authorsation. Complete or partial surrender of an authorisation. Table of authorisations with decision making timescales included within it.
We wish to encourage operators to surrender authorisations (in whole or in part) when they are no longer needed.
For charging purposes, we categorise an application for the surrender (in whole or in part) of an authorisation into one of three types:
administrative,
standard,
substantial.
The application charges largely depend on the amount of technical work we may have to carry out in order to a

Information on how to apply for, vary or modify an authorisation online or by post.
It is important that SEPA's authorisations are kept up to date and therefore accurately reflect the activities that they cover. There are a wide range of reasons why an authorisation may require updating by variation.
Operator initiated variations
For charging fee purposes, we categorise an application for variation of an authorisation, which is initiated by the authorisation holder, into one of t

Emergency response planning
In the event of an incident involving the release of radioactivity to the environment, it’s our role to assess the impacts of the incident and advise on clean-up.
You can report an incident involving radioactive material or radioactive waste by calling SEPA's 24 hour pollution hotline on 0800 807 060
The extent of our involvement in a radioactive incident depends on the nature and scale of the inc
Transfer an authorisation
It is important that SEPA’s authorisations are kept up to date and therefore accurately reflect those who are responsible for securing compliance with the authorisation. The transfer process enables the whole or part of an authorisations to be transferred to another person.
