Submit a radioactive substances notification
You need to notify SEPA if you:
manage any of the following radioactive sources:
sealed sources in IAEA category 5 that exceed 200 kBq;
tritium sources that exceed 20 GBq;
electrodeposited sources
manage a radioactive orphan source
manage radioactive waste from an incident (note: this is a paper form)
You don't need to notify SEPA if the activity can be carried out under a permit or registrat
Register a simple exempt waste activity
Our online application service for registering waste exemptions is now available.
The table of activities you can register through this service is below.
To register your exemption, you'll need the following information:
the name and address of the legal entity registering the exemption; and
where the activity will take place.
If you have this information it should take no longer than five minut

Regulatory methods
These set out the process we follow when assessing abstraction and impoundment applications:

WAT-RM-24: Pumping test methodology (GW)
WAT-RM-26: Determination of aquifer propertie
Emergency response planning
In the event of an incident involving the release of radioactivity to the environment, it’s our role to assess the impacts of the incident and advise on clean-up.
You can report an incident involving radioactive material or radioactive waste by calling SEPA's 24 hour pollution hotline on 0800 807 060
The extent of our involvement in a radioactive incident depends on the nature and scale of the inc

How we forecast flooding
SEPA works with the Met Office to forecast flooding in Scotland, providing accurate and timely information to help emergency responders, local authorities, the public and other organisations prepare for flooding.

Scottish Flood Forecasting Service
This strategic partnership between the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and the Met Office combines hydrological and meteorological information for the first time, so that both organisations can share their expertise to improve the accuracy of flood forecasts for the whole of Scotland.
We collect data from our network of over 250 rainfall, river and
Special Sites
A special site is contaminated land which meets one of the descriptions in the regulations: for example, land on which a process subject to Integrated Pollution Control is, or has been, operated. Special sites do not necessarily represent the most heavily contaminated land: special site designation is the responsibility of local authorities, who are required to seek advice from us.

Special sites do not necessarily represent the most heavily contaminated land: special site designation is the responsibility of local authorities, who are required to seek advice from us.
As part of the requirements of Part IIA, we are obliged to maintain a public register containing details of special sites. Public registers of land identified as statutorily contaminated are maintained by local authorities, who should be contacted for information on contaminated land other than special sites.
